Milk Snake

Lampropeltis triangulum (24-36", up to 52")

A snake with a bold pattern, the milk snake has a lightish grey to beige body patterened with reddish-brown patches outline with black. Bigeger patches on the back alternate with little ones on their sides. There is a pattern on the head, normally with a light "Y" or "V" inside a reddish-brown area. Smooth scales lend this interesting reptile a shiny appearance. Its belly is marked with an irregular pattern of black on white. It can be confused with the copperhead, as the patterns are similar; however, the copperhead doesn't have pattern on its head. It can also rattle it's tail, which could cause some to mistake it for a rattlesnake, even though the two kinds of snake look very different.
